Pauwels Balance

Examples:

The force in our case is N = 240kg and the surface of the head of the femur is approximately S = 12cm2.

  • Pr  = N/S = 240/12 = 20kg/cm2 for a person weighing 72kg when the standing leg is parallel.
  • Pr = N/S = 240/6 = 40 kg/cm2 for a person weighing 72kg when the standing leg is turned out and the surface of the femur in contact with the acetabulum is reduced to 6 cm2.
  • Pr = N/S = 360/6 = 60 kg/cm2 for a heavier person weighing 90kg with the characteristically turned out hips. The pressure in this case is considerably higher.
