I began training with SolCore Fitness in a group class one year ago to address chronic pain remaining after several surgeries in the lumbar and cervical regions of my back. I have just completed a year of personal training with SolCore Fitness.
I have spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal) which impedes nerve pathways resulting in pain and discomfort. Through the ELDOA’s and strength training I have learned how to manage my discomfort quite successfully. In addition I have learned how to increase strength and flexibility thru proper alignment, focus on technique and adhering to my homework. Michael had back pain for 10 years and had recently started having bad sciatica. He was looking for a program that got results and got him out of pain.
My massage therapist recommended I talk to Ekemba and see if his program could help with some nasty sciatica pain that had developed several months earlier. From my past experience with physical therapy and exercise for back issues, I had hope that Ekemba would have some encouraging words, and he did. But given my financial circumstances, I had some hesitation about making a three-month commitment of time and especially money. But I did, and I’ve never regretted it.
During those three months, I found my sciatica pain gradually improving, and I felt an overall sense of rejuvenation and accomplishment after each class. Ekemba and Maya are skilled and highly motivational, and I enjoyed the camaraderie with the other class members. When the first month ended and my membership renewed, I didn’t give the cost a second thought; the classes were worth every penny. And as an added bonus, I lost five pounds over the course of the three months.
Travel is keeping me from signing up for another three-month session right now, but I plan to go back. Ekemba did what he thought he could do: help me reduce my pain. Encouraging, creative, and professional are the words that immediately come to mind when describing Ekemba as a trainer. His encouragement takes on various forms, such as his always enthusiastic greetings, the genuine interest he shows in me as a person, and most importantly, the way in which he guides me through his well-designed workouts. Ekemba seems to intuitively know how to push me beyond what I thought I could do without going overboard or getting in my face. He shows creativity in the workouts by including both traditional types of exercises (bench press, lunges, curls, etc.) along with newer exercises (at least to me) that engaged various muscle groups. The exercises themselves were often varied and never seemed routine or boring. As a result of training with Ekemba, I have become interested in other types of exercise, such as spin classes and running. I can honestly say that I am in better physical shape now than I have been in 10 years, and I know that Ekemba continues to play an instrumental role in me getting back to living a much healthier lifestyle. I’m a 58 year old guy with two fake hips and some disc issues. I’m also quite active, swim 3-4 days a week and was a dancer in a previous life (about 30 years ago!). I’ve worked with lots of trainers and therapists over the years and I have a few key things I look for when I work with someone.
Expertise. A trainer must know what they are doing and demonstrate that pretty quickly to gain my trust. Ekemba knows a great deal about the body and exceptional knowledge in the specialized area I need to improve my back issues. With him, we’ve made serious progress in a few short months. Real progress. My pain is gone!
Empathy. I have physical challenges and if my trainer doesn’t care or empathize, I’m not motivated to continue with him or her. Ekemba cares about my physical state, understands and shows genuine interest where I’m at in my progress arc. That means a lot to me.
Humor. Hey, if I can’t laugh through it all, what’s the point? Yes, Ekemba pushes me hard. And gives me tons of verbal direction. And harasses me. And often gives me things to do I wouldn’t give to an enemy. But he’s doing it for me. And I make jokes about it, and we laugh. (Maybe he’s laughing AT me?!)
I’m bummed he’s leaving town because we’re making great progress and I was looking forward to the next steps with him.
