August is always a quiet invitation—not just the end of summer, but the beginning of a rhythm shift that ripples through my home, my body, and my mind. This year, that shift feels different. Heavier. More alive.

Soleil, my oldest, is stepping into middle school. She’s twelve, standing in that in-between space where childhood’s openness meets the first hints of independence. There’s a new energy about her—sometimes light and playful, other times more measured and thoughtful. She doesn’t always share what’s on her mind, but I can sense the mix of excitement, uncertainty, and curiosity that comes with entering a new world.

Bodhi, my youngest, is heading into third grade. At eight, he still meets change like it’s a grand adventure—full of enthusiasm and optimism. His excitement is a reminder that not all transitions have to feel like a challenge; some can feel like pure possibility.

And yet, as their father, I feel both of their worlds within my own. The steady rhythm of our summer days is giving way to earlier mornings, tighter schedules, and a shift in emotional focus. It’s in moments like this that I’m reminded: a reset isn’t just something my kids need. I need it too—not as a “get back on track” plan, but as a recalibration of my presence and priorities so I can meet them fully in this new season, not just watch them step into it.

Stretching Isn’t Just Passive Relaxation

The kind of stretching you see in most gyms—grabbing your foot, throwing a leg on a bench, or flinging your arm across your chest—is outdated and ineffective.

At best, it temporarily increases range of motion. At worst, it disrupts how your body generates strength.

But with the right approach, stretching can actually improve strength by working with the body’s connective tissue system—specifically, your fascia.


Stretching vs. Warming Up: Know the Difference

Let’s clear this up:

  • Warm-up: Prepares your body for activity
  • Stretching: Helps normalize tissues after activity
  • Foam rolling: Neither warming up nor stretching—and often harmful to fascia

Warm-ups increase your current potential. Stretching expands what’s possible over time. That’s why you should never stretch before intense activity—only after.


Why Fascia Matters for Strength

Fascia is the body’s connective tissue matrix. It wraps every muscle, nerve, and organ—creating structure, transmitting force, and supporting movement.

If your fascia is:

  • Dehydrated
  • Stressed
  • Tangled from poor posture or injury

…it will limit how your muscles function. Stretching properly hydrates, aligns, and restores fascia—giving your muscles a better “container” to generate force from.


The Science Behind It: Tensegrity + Hill’s Muscle Model

Your body works through tensegrity—a balance of tension and compression. When fascia is out of balance, your strength output suffers.

According to Hill’s Muscle Model, true strength depends on:

  1. Muscle fibers
  2. Tendons
  3. Fascia

Most programs only train the first two. The third component—fascia—is what holistic stretching trains directly.


Myofascial Stretching: What It Actually Does

Done correctly, myofascial stretching:

✅ Aligns fascial chains across the body
✅ Improves posture and neuromuscular communication
✅ Boosts coordination within strength movements
✅ Reduces injury risk by improving structural integrity

Think of it as strengthening from the inside out.


Why Most People Miss This

Stretching that leads to strength isn’t generic. You can’t Google a “hip flexor stretch” and expect it to improve your squat.

You need to:

  • Know which chain the muscle belongs to
  • Line up posture and joints correctly
  • Understand how it connects to your fascia and nervous system

Do You Know the Truth About The Bend Pattern?

Bending is one of the most common movements we use in everyday life—picking up your kids, moving a box, swinging a golf club. But most people don’t do it well. That poor movement adds up, leading to tightness, pain, or injury over time.

So should you jump straight into Romanian deadlifts (RDLs) or kettlebell swings to “fix” it?

Not quite.

Let’s unpack what the bend pattern really is, which muscle chains are involved, and how to approach this movement holistically so your body gets stronger—not more worn down.

What Is the Bend Pattern, Really?

In training, the bend pattern refers to a hip-dominant movement like an RDL or deadlift. You’ll see this pattern show up solo or combined with other movements during everyday life—lifting, twisting, walking, squatting.

But just “doing” the movement doesn’t mean you’re doing it well.

If your muscle chains are out of balance—some tight, some weak, some misfiring—practicing the bend pattern without addressing the root causes can reinforce dysfunction and eventually lead to pain or breakdown.


The Bend Pattern Is a Global Movement

Unlike isolated exercises, the bend pattern is what we call a “global” movement. It requires the whole body to coordinate and act as one. That’s why I don’t just teach the movement—I assess how your body is functioning within the movement.

We look at the full chain: the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments, and how they interact.

The primary chain behind the bend pattern is your posterior chain—from your heel to your calves, hamstrings, glutes, deep back muscles, and even your neck and shoulders. But your anterior and lateral chains help stabilize that pattern too.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the key players:

  • Soleus
  • Gastrocnemius (calf muscles)
  • Hamstrings
  • Gluteus maximus
  • Four layers of spinal muscles
  • Trapezius
  • Rhomboids
  • Levator scapulae
  • Shoulder stabilizers

The Problem with Just “Doing” the Bend

Too often, people start loading up barbells without assessing the quality of their chain or how their fascia is functioning.

The bend pattern naturally places more mechanical load on the lower back than a squat—simply due to leverage. That’s not a bad thing. But it becomes a problem if:

  • You haven’t trained segmentally
  • Your fascia is out of balance
  • You’ve overloaded the system
  • You’re dealing with an acute back issue

Force isn’t the enemy. Misapplied force is.


How to Learn the Bend Pattern: Start Pure

To truly master this pattern, you must start with clean motor control. I teach the butt-back, bow-forward drill from a kneeling position. It’s the most stripped-down, brain-friendly way to teach your body how to move properly.

From there:

  1. Kneeling →
  2. Bodyweight standing RDL →
  3. Light weight →
  4. Full deadlift (hip + knee bend)

At each step, you’re grooving the right motor pattern—building a motor engram in your brain so you move properly without having to think about it.

Key pointers:

  • Keep a neutral spine (don’t over-arch or round)
  • Maintain all four natural curves in your back
  • Shift weight back into heels—but don’t lift your toes
  • Move as one unit—don’t break at the spine
  • Engage your abs and lats for support

Common Mistakes (That Will Wreck Your Back)

  • Rounding the spine
  • Overarching the lower back
  • Losing foot contact
  • Using too much weight too soon
  • Not progressing through proper training stages

Instagram might celebrate a rounded-back deadlift, but your body won’t. You want smooth, controlled, segmental movement—built over time with intention.


The Fascia Piece (Why It Matters)

Muscles don’t work in isolation. They’re wrapped in and connected by fascia—a living, communicative network that governs structure, neurology, and coordination.

If your fascia is dehydrated, compressed, or restricted, your body can’t move well—even if your muscles are “strong.”

Here’s what affects fascia health:

  • 🚰 Dehydration (aim for half your body weight in ounces of plain water daily)
  • 😰 Chronic stress
  • 🧍‍♂️ Not working the fascia directly (training in multiple planes and ranges)

Deadlift vs. RDL

Once you master the RDL, you can layer in the deadlift by adding controlled knee flexion. The movement stays hip-dominant, but now you’re handling more force and range of motion.

Both movements are important—but only if you’ve earned the right to do them well.

Building a bend pattern takes time. Don’t rush. Train your brain, train your chains, and train your fascia. It’s not about how much weight you lift. It’s about how well you move—now and for the rest of your life.

Back pain affects over 550 million people worldwide, and with that kind of number, it’s no surprise people are searching for relief—fast. One of the more popular trends? Hanging from a pull-up bar to decompress the spine. But is this method really helping, or could it be doing more harm than good?

Let’s break it down through a holistic, fascia-informed lens, so you can understand what’s really happening when you hang—and whether it’s a smart choice for your back.

🔍 Why People Hang for Back Pain

The theory is simple: when you hang, your body weight creates a gentle pull on the spine, which seems to decompress the vertebrae. It’s popular among physical therapists and fitness influencers who promote spinal decompression as a fix for bulging discs, tight backs, or just general discomfort.

But like most things in health and fitness, simple doesn’t mean effective—and it certainly doesn’t mean safe for everyone.


🚫 When Hanging Might Do More Harm Than Good

Let’s start by understanding what kind of back pain you’re dealing with. Here’s a simple breakdown:

  1. No pain – Fine for general feel-good movement
  2. Semi-chronic – Occasional flare-ups
  3. Chronic – Consistent daily discomfort
  4. Acute – Sharp, intense pain or injury

🔴 Acute or chronic pain? Avoid hanging. Your body is already inflamed and dysregulated. Hanging adds unpredictable force to an unstable system—it’s not specific, and it can worsen the problem.

🟡 Semi-chronic? Maybe—but only for brief relief, not correction.

🟢 No pain? You’re free to experiment, but don’t expect it to fix much.


🌀 What Really Happens When You Hang?

When you lift your feet and hang from a bar, your body wobbles. That instability triggers your core and spinal muscles to contract constantly in small ways just to keep you from falling.

That means instead of fully relaxing and lengthening your spine, your body is busy protecting itself. And contraction ≠ decompression.


📌 The Specificity Problem

Even if hanging did decompress the spine, it doesn’t target where you need it most.

Back pain often shows up in specific areas—like L4-L5, T12-L1, or T8-T9. But when you hang, your body moves where it’s already free and open—not where it’s stuck.

➡️ Correction requires specificity. If you can’t direct the force to the exact spinal segment in need, you’re just stretching the wrong places.


🪢 No Fixed Point = No Progress

To correct posture or decompress a joint, your body needs fixed points above and below the target area. Hanging removes that control. It’s like trying to stretch a rubber band without holding the ends.

You can’t direct the force. You can’t stabilize. You can’t be specific. And without that, no real change happens.


🔄 Twisting While Hanging? Please Don’t.

Some videos promote twisting your body while hanging. That’s biomechanically dangerous.

When you twist your spine under load (yes, hanging counts), you create compression, not decompression. The spinal discs and surrounding ligaments are not built to rotate freely under tension—especially not in a compromised state.


🏗️ Hanging Is a Closed Kinetic Chain

If you’re trying to create space in your spine, you need open kinetic chain movement—freedom at the end joint. But hanging is closed-chain. Your arms are fixed; your spine becomes the weak link under tension.

That’s the opposite of what you want if your goal is spinal decompression.


🔧 So What Should You Do Instead?

Back pain isn’t always caused by your back. Common culprits include:

  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Pinched nerves or blood vessels
  • Structural imbalance
  • Weakness or asymmetry in trunk muscles
  • Poor fascial tension distribution

You need to balance strength and mobility across your entire structure. That includes your spine, diaphragm, abs, ribs, back muscles, and everything connected via fascia.

🧠 And most importantly—you must re-educate your body. Passive hanging doesn’t do that. You need specific exercises and postures that restore function, reduce compression, and create stability through proper alignment.


✅ Here’s What Works Better

Most people hit the gym or roll out the yoga mat with good intentions. You want to get stronger, feel better, prevent pain, or look a little more like your best self in the mirror. But what you do in the name of “health” doesn’t always lead to health!

I’ve seen it firsthand, time and again. A client comes in, confused—”I’m following the routines I see in magazines, but my knees are getting worse,” or, “My back hurts after yoga, even though everyone tells me it’s supposed to help.” Every time, the problem isn’t willpower or effort. It’s that not all exercises serve all bodies—and real harm can happen when the wrong movements are forced.

Let’s look at two stories. Months back, I worked with a runner—we’ll call him Mike—who started coming to me for knee pain. Mike powered through marathons, even as a swelling lump formed on the inside of his knee. Instead of seeking an expert, he popped painkillers, got a cortisone shot, and ran harder. Finally, when the swelling forced him to limp, he had to stop. What was the core issue? Mike’s running form was repetitively compressing and twisting the knee joint, causing inflammation in the small plica folds. Even a “harmless” strength move he’d copied from a YouTuber—heavy leg extensions—compounded the irritation.

Similarly, another client (a retired teacher, let’s call her Anna) suffered from cervical instability and a family history of heart disease. Yet every morning, driven by her online instructor’s example, she did deep neck stretches, holding headstand-like inversions. For Anna, those movements meant excessive pressure on already weakened joints and arteries, risking severe complications beyond simple soreness.

Why This Happens More Than You Think

Much of our exercise culture is based on “what’s trendy,” passed-down gym routines, or social media demonstration—rarely on what’s safe (or necessary) for each unique body. What’s considered “universal” for mobility or strength can be the wrong fit: knees that collapse on squats when the hips are weak, necks twisted when posture and strength aren’t there, or overly aggressive stretching on hypermobile bodies.

Even experienced practitioners can overlook the subtle signals—mild aches, swelling, post-exercise tension—mistaking them for harmless “burn.” But these warning lights, if not addressed, evolve into bigger problems: torn ligaments, chronic pain, headaches, or even heart issues.

How to Tell What’s Good for You

Rule #1: Pain or persistent discomfort is never just “normal.” It’s your body’s alarm system. The deeper lesson: what’s safe is deeply individual.

A movement pattern that helps one person might wear down someone else. For example:

  • Forward bends can compress discs if you have lumbar instability.
  • Ballistic stretching can provoke nerve irritation or muscle tears, especially in tight, repetitive movers.
  • Holding inversions like shoulder-stands for “neuro health” can cut off nerve or blood supply in folks with vascular conditions.

This is where assessment and biomechanical knowledge come in. A movement has to be good for your body—not just popular.

What You Can Do Right Now

  • Get a simple movement screen (with a professional) before radically changing your exercise routine.
  • Pay attention: Is pain local, referred, sharp, or persistent? Don’t “tough it out.”
  • Adjust—there’s always a modification or alternative.
  • Track swelling, redness, or loss of mobility (in the knees, neck, spine, shoulders) as early warnings.
  • Never ignore contraindications—e.g., family heart disease, joint instability, history of injury—or push them under the rug.

But while “fascia” has become a buzzword, most of the information circulating about fascia stretching is either incomplete, outdated, or outright wrong.

You might see videos or articles that apply the same old exercise routines from the ’80s and ’90s and simply call it “fascia training.” The truth? Fascia is a unique, intelligent tissue, and it demands a specific and respectful approach if you want to stretch and train it correctly.

Let’s break down what fascia is, why it matters, and how to stretch it properly using science-backed, body-respecting methods.


What Is Fascia?

Fascia is connective tissue — a living network made up of cells, fibers, and an internal matrix. It surrounds and connects everything in your body, from your muscles and bones to your nerves, arteries, and even organs.

Think of it like an interconnected spiderweb that runs from head to toe, fingertip to fingertip. It’s not just the white stuff you peel off meat — it plays active roles in:

  • Circulation
  • Structure and posture
  • Communication
  • Immune defense
  • Mobility
  • Energy transfer
  • Protection and scarring

And one of its most important features is its ability to carry fluid through microscopic tubes. These tubes — when working properly — transport nutrients and remove waste efficiently. But here’s the key: Fascia must stay hydrated, intact, and unobstructed to perform these roles well.


What Science Says About Fascia Stretching

Many people (and even some professionals) make the mistake of applying aggressive techniques like foam rolling or Graston scraping, thinking they’re helping their fascia. In reality, these methods can crush the delicate tubes in the fascial network, causing more harm than good.

Proper fascia stretching requires:

  • Respect for the fascial chains — long lines of muscles and tissue that connect across the body
  • Precise anatomical knowledge — so you know which direction and angle to stretch
  • Global tension — stretching from the tip of your toes to the tip of your fingers
  • Gentle, sustained force — to loosen the tissue without damaging it

Two methods that truly honor these requirements are Myofascial Stretching and Global Postural Stretching (GPS). Myofascial stretches target specific chains; GPS works with full-body tension and alignment. Both respect the body’s biotensegrity—its balance of tension and compression that maintains structure and function.


An Example of How Fascia Chains Work

Let’s look at one fascial chain: from your heel up through your lateral calf, into the hamstring (biceps femoris), through the glutes, into your back, and out to your arm. This chain includes:

  • Lateral gastroc
  • Biceps femoris
  • Gluteus maximus
  • Thoracolumbar fascia
  • Latissimus dorsi

To stretch one part of this chain — say, the biceps femoris — you’d need to:

  1. Do the opposite action of that muscle (extend the knee, flex the hip)
  2. Align the stretch globally, with tension from feet to fingertips
  3. Stretch in sequence, respecting the full chain

You can’t isolate fascia. It’s not how the tissue works.


What Not to Do
